Spousal Support + Alimony
Helping You Through the Transition of Divorce
Whether you are paying or receiving alimony, you have the right to continue the lifestyle you enjoyed while married. Spousal support should not be a means to financial problems. At Johnston, Root & Leibenguth, P.C., in Portland, Oregon, we strive to find resolution in potentially contentious money matters.
Both spouses have financial needs, no matter who is paying spousal support. Our job is to identify those needs and ensure that our client is not struggling with money issues after alimony is finalized. For help, contact us at (503) 946-5373.
Determining the Right Type of Alimony Based on Your Needs
At Johnston, Root & Leibenguth, P.C., we help clients understand a proper alimony amount based on their specific needs. Currently in Oregon there are three types of Alimony:
- Spousal Maintenance is often ordered after longer marriages and is not easily modified. It generally applies if you or your spouse are suffering from health issues or are not employable. Please note that even if you are the paying spouse and suffer a financial setback, under a maintenance award you may still be required to make the payments.
- Transitional spousal support is the most common form of alimony and the most modifiable. It is often ordered for a shorter duration. This type of alimony is often used to cover expenses for the custodial parent or helps in the transition of a spouse back into the work force where he or she can eventually support themselves.
- Compensatory support is alimony that helps reimburse you or your spouse for putting the other through school or training prior to the divorce.
Do Not Let Money Issues Get in the Way
Whatever type of spousal support you are required to pay or need to receive, your attorney will help facilitate the process of resolving the matter. That can come through mediation. Far too many times, money issues can drive a rift through two once very cooperative parties.
